10:30:52 PM Wow. This could be pretty cool. I've used VMWare before, and half the hassle of running it is installing the guest OS successfully. Having a pre-installed disk-image to work with really simplifies things. This is also a smart move for MS; it allows more of their apps to be run under Linux easily. Hmmm...wonder if this is a bit of "hedging their bets" considering how it looks like the anti-trust trial may come out...

9:54:46 PM In honor of April Fool's Day, Salon commemorates the Seven Blunderers of the World. It's staggering really, to comprehend just how badly you could screw up and still come off looking better than these guys.

8:51:34 PM Well, the job search is over. I've landed a CTO position with a very promising e-commerce start-up that's just pulled together first round financing. Half my time will be devoted to that, and half my time to being VP of Support Services for iRobotics as the new company takes off. Some very cool stuff, with some people I know and have worked with before, and I don't have to move. All-inall, I'm well satisfied, I'll be doing the sorts of things I love, and I don't have to go through the hassle of relocation. To say that I'm relieved would be an understatement!

8:46:54 PM I'm already using MyDocs to handle document transfer from my Palm VII, but vVault looks like it might have even more functionality. Really, there's no reason not to have critical files accessible from just about anywhere with this sort of stuff available.

8:40:11 AM Back from Oakland! A nice town, but I don't think the job's a match for me. Good people, and a good company, but something's just not right, you know? Meanwhile, something else has come up that might not even require me to move. Two something's actually. More on this later today, after I have details. It could be that the job search ends today!
Mental note: avoid flying into Indianapolis just prior to Final Four weekend.

7:38:10 PM I have to give S H I F T some kudos for classy use of Flash animation. I've never read this magazine before, but it looks like what Wired set out to be before being bought by the marketing hacks.

5:25:11 PM Gah. Is it possible to have too many opportunities? I have so many different ways to go with this job search I'm just not sure which way to jump at this point!

9:15:39 AM Some initial information on Kylix, Borland's new version of Delphi for Linux. From the hints given in this article, this is sounding really, really cool. I can see this becoming an important tool just about anywhere I work.

11:08:17 PM Interesting. Intel has made a minority investment in Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc. It appears that the Lynx guys are developing embedded Linux stuff these days. Back in the days I worked in robotics we were using the Lynx OS in a new PC-based robot controller we were developing. It certainly made a good controller OS for some very sophisticated robotic welding and cutting applications. I can't imagine that the networking equipment they're working on that attracted this investment is anymore complex than that was.

10:52:29 PM Hello Healdsburg! Wanna buy me a beer when I'm in Oakland? Any advice on moving to northern CA? In any case, thanks for visiting me here every day.

9:44:03 PM I'm headed for Oakland on Wednesday, for an interview. I had actually told the company in question that I didn't want to pursue this anymore, but they tried so hard to convince me that I was impressed. They actually sound like a really good company to work for, I'm just concerned about the seniority of the position. They seem really interested in me, though, and it's a good e-commerce opportunity, so it can't hurt to take a look, right? Particularly since the other company I'm seriously interested in has slowed down their process to a crawl.
In other news, I got a haircut today. Like a serious "cut-it-almost-completely-off" haircut. Given my rapidly advancing state of hair loss, I look less ridiculous that way.

9:37:19 PM Slashdot is already carrying this, but this news is just too great. It sounds like Bioware may be planning a port of Baldur's Gate 2 to Linux! LinuxPower has an interview with the Bioware guys about this, and the release of Neverwinter Nights on multiple platforms. If BG2 were to make it to Linux, my Windows partition would be history...

8:51:50 PM A good explanation as to why there aren't epidemics of Linux virii. Not anything new for the savvy sysadmin, but good information if you don't understand some of the basic differences between how Linux and Windows operate.

4:19:47 PM It's been a lovely weekend here; much too nice to be sitting at the computer much. I spent most of yesterday down in Brown County, one of the lovliest areas in Indiana. The town of Nashville specifically is very nice; it's an artists colony with some really nice shops and such.
Today I started on the redesign of my Japanese garden. There was a good bit of repair work to be done from the winter, and then I started rebuilding the waterfall to make it look more natural. Last year I'd used a plastic basin at the top of the falls, and it just looked horrible. Now I've rebuilt the top using rock, and edged the entire pond with flat stones, so it looks much better. I've also put in some stepping stones, for more of a "tea garden" look. Last year's efforts were more along the lines of a Zen rock garden, which was cool, and I'm keeping some of that. Overall, though, I really was to make it more into a tea garden. I'm not sure how much of that I'll manage to get done if I have to move, but at least it'll look presentable if we have to sell the house.
